Since Engelberg Monastery was founded, giving young people a sound education also included motivating them to read and to study books in a library. That is still the case today, though printed books have now been joined by new forms of media.
The Media Center’s books, online resources and DVDs are intended to be used both in the educational offerings of the Stiftsschule and for the personal leisure activities of the school community.
The Media Center is a place of learning and of coming-together that can help stimulate students’ natural curiosity and their joy of reading, as well as help them to develop their ability to learn and to think critically.
The Media Center offers students and teaching staff of the Stiftsschule and the IOS Engelberg a reference section, a lending library and a media room. Media Center users can also read newspapers, journals and magazines in the reading room or in the boarding section.
The lending library includes works of non-fiction and fiction, and these books may be borrowed on a monthly basis. The library also provides an atmosphere conducive to quiet reading.
The reference collection offers both a working area and a group workspace. It is conducive to quiet, concentrated study. The books, newspapers and magazines of the reference collection must be used on site.
The media room opposite the lending library holds a large collection of DVDs. These may be borrowed for a week at a time, for both teaching and leisure purposes.
Opening times are as follows:
- Lending library and media room: Mondays and Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.;
Thursdays, 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 4:10 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- Reference collection: Mondays to Fridays, at all times
The inventory of the Media Center can be viewed via the Media Center catalog of the Stiftsschule Engelberg. Besides allowing users to find the Center’s collection, it also allows them to search according to subject topics and to reserve media online. The Intranet for Stiftsschule students offers a link to the Media Center’s online catalog.
