Our Future Now! Youth Forum Switzerland 2020
An EVENTful day at the International School of Zug and Lucerne (ISZL)
Dark and early on Thursday, 16 January at 6.30 am our Stiftsschule delegation of 10 students and 2 chaperones boarded public transport to travel to the third annual Youth Forum Switzerland at ISZL. This all-day event consisted of a huge program packed with talks and interactive sessions that each of us had signed up for the week before—some using the new YFS app. Our individualized itineraries were framed by an opening session attended by all participants, speakers and organizers, and a closing session that included international entertainment and summarizing remarks. This year our group made it a point to stay for an àpero riche so that we could possibly meet some of the speakers and other interesting people involved in the event. As public transport would have it, there were delays on the return home, so we made it back to Engelberg by 8 pm, with time for a fast-food dinner break in Lucerne.
There were many interesting aspects to the day. Here are some observations as well as snippets from follow-up statements written by our students:
The event was a ZERO WASTE, CARBON NEUTRAL event. (As is the ISZL campus!)Over 700 students were in attendance from 24 different schools—both Swiss and international ones. Speakers included people from the top tiers of international organizations, NGOs, impressive professions in the industry, from foreign countries—as well as student presenters with little or no previous public exposure.
This was an English-speaking event.
On the topic of Shaping Our Present and Future: “I really took to heart: ‘I’m a part of the problem, (when) I could be part of the solution!’” K.E.
W.P.: “I really liked the Impact Lab 4F. It was about exploring gene modification through avatars; I found the way everything was explained and the discussions with the people in our group really interesting.”
On the topic of Mental Health: “My favorite talk was by ETH Professor Johannes Bohacek about dealing with stress. He spoke very well and the talk was stimulating. I took away so many things from the presentation, especially about how to prepare for exam situations and how adrenalin works in our bodies.” C.F.
,,The YFS was a very positive and interesting event. I would like to attend the Youth Forum Switzerland again next year!” C.F.
